
David W. Vandewalker,
a third-generation wind band conductor, is an elected American Bandmasters Association member, Sousa Foundation's Sudler Flag of Honor recipient, and author of multiple music education resources published by GIA Publications, Inc.
B i o g r a p h y
David W. Vandewalker is a recognized conductor, educator, and thought leader whose work has shaped music programs and leadership culture nationwide. He currently serves as the conductor of the Georgia Wind Symphony, the executive director of the Servant Leadership Association for Music, and the founder of Strategic Boosters®, where he equips music educators and parent organizations with practical systems for sustainable success.
With a career spanning public education, higher education, and nonprofit leadership, Dr. Vandewalker has held influential roles, including Coordinator of Performing Arts for Fulton County Schools, associate conductor of Tara Winds, assistant director of bands at Georgia State University, and Director of Bands at Harrison High School. His ensembles have performed on some of the nation’s most prestigious stages, including the Midwest Clinic, Music for All National Concert Festival, and CBDNA/NBA conferences. Under his leadership, programs have earned national distinction, including appearances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Presidential Inaugural Parade, as well as recognition as a Bands of America Grand National Finalist.
An active contributor to the profession, Dr. Vandewalker is a frequent clinician, instructional coach,
all-state and honor band conductor, adjudicator, and presenter, sharing professional development throughout North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. As an avid supporter of new music for the wind band, he works with composers, arrangers, and performing artists in the wind band medium. Residencies and collaborations with composers and other conductors are integral to his creative work. Additionally, he has evaluated performances at the Music for All National Festival, served on the National Band Association board, and served as Executive Director of the Conn-Selmer Parent Booster Community, helping to expand parent engagement and organizational effectiveness.
He has contributed articles to numerous professional journals, chapters to multiple volumes of the Teaching Music Through Performance series (GIA), and Rehearsing the High School Band (Meredith Music). As an author with GIA Publications, his works—including Boosters to the Rescue, Strategic Plans for a Successful Booster Club, Crafting Culture: Becoming a Music Teacher Leader, and Strategic Rehearsing for Superior Musical Performance (in press)—have become essential resources for music educators seeking to elevate both performance and program culture.
Dr. Vandewalker is a recognized leader in music education, serving as clinician, instructional coach, All-state and honor band conductor, adjudicator, and presenter across North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. His contributions as a conductor have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Sudler Flag of Honor, ten National Band Association Citations of Excellence, and three National Wind Band Honors Awards. He is also an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association.
Dr. Vandewalker holds degrees from Baylor University, Central Michigan University, and Boston University. He and his wife, Pamela, reside in Marietta, where she served as Minister of Creativity and Worship Programming at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, where over 900 children were actively involved in music-making each week. Pamela (Master of Music in Choral Conducting - UM/Kansas City Conservatory) is a 2014 Dove Award winner for Best Children’s/Youth Musical in her collaboration with Veggie Tales/Big Idea. Together, David and Pamela created Teeny Tykes and Tunes, an early childhood music curriculum series published in English and Spanish (Vision Publications), along with Teeny Tykes and Tunes: Africa Edition, Volume 1 and 2 (CLMC/Nairobi).
